Brits living abroad may occasionally hanker for roast beef and Yorkshire pudding, cricket and cask bitter – but another British favourite has been helping to drive export sales for a Northampton food company.
Cooked ingredient company TMI Foods has seen a recent surge in interest from abroad for its Pigs In Blankets, those bite-sized bacon rollers containing either a cocktail sausage, cheese or fruit.
“For the first time, we have been supplying Pigs In Blankets through our wholesaler in Barcelona for the expat communities in the coastal areas of Spain,” said Managing Director David Abbott.
“The first surge of interest came last Christmas when we supplied the products to accompany seasonal turkey meals, but a steady demand has continued from Spain which we are continuing to supply. They are ideal as an appetiser or party snack, and their popularity is obviously spreading on the Costas!”
TMI Foods produces 6.5 million Pigs In Blankets at its Northampton factory for the major multiples, foodservice and export markets.
The company’s export business is expanding in other parts of Europe. In France, it supplies cooked bacon to sandwich, baguette and other food manufacturers, and has recently opened supply channels to Denmark to similar customers.
In Belgium, the company supplies one of the largest supermarket groups, Delhaize, with retail packs of crispy streaky and cooked back bacon.
